Use this competitor monitoring checklist to build a complete competitive intelligence program — from selecting competitors and pages through Scout setup, role assignment, review cadences, and response workflows. Work through each section in order. When every box is checked, you have automated monitoring, structured documentation, and a team rhythm for acting on competitive changes.
This checklist is the operational companion to the competitor website monitoring guide and lightweight competitive intelligence system. Print it, copy it to your project management tool, or work through it section by section.
Phase 1: Competitor selection
- List all companies customers mention in sales calls
- List all companies you lose deals to
- List all companies with overlapping functionality
- Rank by competitive threat (deal frequency × functional overlap)
- Select top 3 competitors for initial monitoring
- Note 2 adjacent competitors for phase 2 expansion
- Document competitor names, websites, and primary products

Phase 3: Page Scout creation
Create Scouts via competitor website monitoring.
Required Scouts (9 minimum for 3 competitors)

- Competitor 3 — homepage Scout
Optional Scouts (phase 2)
- Feature page Scouts for closest rival
- Promotion page Scouts for each competitor
- Solutions page Scouts for new landing page detection
- Comparison page Scouts (if competitors publish them)
Scout configuration
- All Scouts set to daily checks (Free) or appropriate Pro interval
- All Scout conditions are specific (not "tell me when anything changes")
- Scout Ping email notifications confirmed working
- Total Scout count documented: _____ Scouts
Phase 4: Documentation setup
- Competitive tracking document created (Notion, Sheet, or doc)
- Competitive profile created for each monitored competitor
- Feature matrix started with key capabilities
- Ping log table created (date, page, change, impact, action)
- Positioning history section started per competitor
- Document shared with relevant team members
Phase 5: Role assignment
